Hawaii has legally banned sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate since 2021. These chemicals damage coral reefs and marine life. Only mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide-based) are permitted. Visitors caught with banned sunscreens can be fined. Buy reef-safe sunscreen before you travel — choice is better and prices are lower than on the islands.
How far is Honolulu from the UK?
About 16–18 hours total flying time, almost always with a connection through Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle. There are no direct flights from the UK to Hawaii. Plan the connection carefully — US customs must be cleared at your first US point of entry, which adds time to the LA or SF connection.
