What is Tallinn Old Town like?
Tallinn Old Town (Vanalinn) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and genuinely extraordinary — medieval walls, towers, cobbled streets and market squares that feel largely unchanged since the 15th century. Town Hall Square hosts markets in summer and the Christmas Market in December (one of Europe's best). The upper town (Toompea Hill) has cathedral and castle views across the lower town rooftops.
Is Tallinn expensive?
Very affordable by Northern European standards — comparable to Krakow or Riga. A restaurant meal costs roughly half what it would in Helsinki (just across the Baltic by ferry). The Estonian food scene has developed significantly — Tallinn is now a genuine food destination with world-class restaurants at very reasonable prices.
When is the best time to visit Tallinn?
June to August for long evenings, outdoor dining and the best weather. December for the Christmas Market — one of the most atmospheric in Europe, with real snow often adding to the medieval setting. Avoid November and early March — cold, dark and little atmosphere. The frozen sea in January–February is spectacular if you're prepared for the cold.
