How hard is Pen y Fan?
From the Storey Arms car park, it's a well-made path of about 4 miles round trip with 450m of ascent — manageable for most reasonably fit walkers in 2.5–3.5 hours. Don't underestimate it though: the summit is fully exposed, weather turns fast, and mountain rescue is called out regularly for people in trainers and cotton hoodies. The Horseshoe Ridge from Cwm Gwdi is a quieter, better walk to the same summit.
What is the Four Falls Trail?
A 5.5-mile circuit in Waterfall Country near Ystradfellte visiting four major waterfalls, including Sgwd yr Eira where the path goes behind the curtain of water. Paths are rocky, rooty and slippery when wet — proper footwear needed. Arrive early; the car park fills by mid-morning in summer.
Is the Brecon Beacons good for stargazing?
It was Wales' first International Dark Sky Reserve. On clear moonless nights the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Good spots include the Usk Reservoir, Crai Reservoir and Llanthony Priory. Bring a red-light torch to preserve night vision, warm layers even in summer, and check moon phase before planning a trip around the stars.
Do you need sun cream in the Brecon Beacons even in cold weather?
Yes — this catches a lot of walkers out. UV exposure at altitude on an exposed ridge is genuinely stronger than the air temperature suggests, and hours of walking with no shade adds up even on a cool, overcast day. Pack sun cream alongside your cold-weather kit rather than leaving it at home just because it doesn't feel like sunbathing weather.
Are there shops near the main walking trailheads in the Brecon Beacons?
Very few. The park is genuinely remote in parts — Storey Arms car park (for Pen y Fan) and most Waterfall Country trailheads have no shop, and mobile signal is patchy. Buy food, water and any last-minute supplies in Brecon, Merthyr Tydfil or another town before heading out, and carry cash — several car parks charge a small parking fee (typically £1-3) with no card machine on site.
Will I get wet walking the Four Falls Trail even if I don't go behind the waterfall?
Quite possibly. Several sections of the path run close enough to Sgwd yr Eira and Sgwd Clun-Gwyn that spray carries onto the path in anything above normal flow, especially after rain. A waterproof jacket is worth wearing rather than just carrying, and a dry bag for your phone and camera is a genuinely good idea here, not just for the swimming spots.
