Frequently Asked Questions
Do UK citizens need a visa for New Zealand?
UK citizens need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) for visits up to 6 months. Apply through the New Zealand Immigration NZeTA app or website — it costs NZD $17 for the app or $23 online and is typically approved within 72 hours. Also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) at the same time.
Is Auckland worth spending time in or should I head south immediately?
Worth 2–3 days at least. The Waiheke Island day trip alone (30-minute ferry, vineyards, beaches) is outstanding. Rangitoto volcano, the Auckland Domain and Ponsonby's food scene are all excellent. Most visitors rush through — those who stay longer are usually glad they did.
How strong is the UV in Auckland?
Very — New Zealand has one of the world's highest UV indices due to the thin ozone layer in the southern hemisphere. The UV Index regularly reaches 12+ (extreme) in summer. Factor 50+ sunscreen is essential and burns happen in 10–15 minutes without protection. This catches many European visitors off guard.
