What is a levada walk?

Levadas are Madeira's ancient irrigation channels — narrow concrete waterways that traverse the island's mountains. Paths run alongside them, ranging from flat easy walks to exposed cliff-edge scrambles. The Levada do Caldeirão Verde and Levada das 25 Fontes are the most famous. Some tunnels are pitch dark — bring a head torch. Waterproofs are essential as clouds can form suddenly.

Is Madeira good for beach holidays?

Not if you're expecting sandy beaches — Madeira is volcanic and most 'beaches' are black pebble or rock lido pools. The exception is Porto Santo, a 15-minute flight or 2.5-hour ferry away, which has a stunning 9km sandy beach. Many visitors use Madeira's rock pools and natural sea swimming spots instead.

When is the best time to visit Madeira?

Madeira is genuinely year-round. Spring (March–May) brings wildflowers and the Flower Festival. Summer is warm and busy. Autumn has calmer seas for boat trips. Winter (December–February) has the mildest climate in Europe (18–22°C) and the famous New Year fireworks display, the largest in the world by Guinness World Records.
