Is Snowdon safe to climb without a guide?
Yes — the Llanberis Path is the most popular route and is well-marked and manageable for fit walkers in good conditions. However, the summit weather can change rapidly. Always check the Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) forecast, not just a standard weather app. The Pyg Track and Miners' Track are also excellent. The Snowdon Ranger path is quieter.
How wet is Wales compared to the rest of the UK?
Significantly wetter, particularly in Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons. Annual rainfall in parts of Snowdonia exceeds 3,000mm — among the highest in Wales and England. Kit that is described as 'water resistant' rather than 'waterproof' will let you down. Invest in proper waterproofs.
What is the Pembrokeshire Coast Path like?
One of the finest coastal paths in Britain — 186 miles of dramatic cliff scenery, coves, beaches and wildlife including puffins, grey seals and choughs. It's well waymarked but undulating with significant daily ascent and descent totals. A full end-to-end walk takes 10–15 days; many walkers do sections.
Which is better for beginners — Snowdon or the Brecon Beacons?
The Brecon Beacons generally suit newer hillwalkers better — Pen y Fan's main path is well-maintained and shorter, and the range as a whole has gentler, more rounded summits. Snowdon's popular paths (Llanberis, Pyg Track) are still accessible to reasonably fit beginners, but the mountain is higher, weather turns faster, and the summit area gets genuinely exposed. Either is fine for a first Welsh mountain with the right kit and a fair-weather day — just don't underestimate Snowdon specifically.
How many days do you need for a Welsh walking trip?
A long weekend (3–4 days) covers one range properly — Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons alone, with a rest day or shorter walk built in. A full week lets you combine two areas, such as Snowdonia and the Llŷn Peninsula coast, or the Beacons and the Wye Valley. Wales rewards slower travel — roads through the mountains are narrow and journey times longer than distances suggest.
What is Cadair Idris and is it worth doing instead of Snowdon?
Cadair Idris is Snowdonia's second-most-famous mountain, often considered by experienced walkers to have the better view — partly because Snowdon itself isn't visible from its own summit, whereas Cadair Idris looks back across the whole range. It's quieter than Snowdon, similarly serious in bad weather, and a genuinely excellent alternative for walkers who want the challenge without the crowds.
Do I need to book anything in advance for Welsh walking trips?
Snowdon's Pen-y-Pass car park requires pre-booking online in summer and sells out weeks ahead — this is the single most important advance booking for any Snowdonia trip. Popular Airbnbs and B&Bs in Betws-y-Coed and Beddgelert also book up early in peak season (May–September). Everything else — bothies, campsites outside peak weekends, most trailheads elsewhere — can usually be arranged closer to the date.
What wildlife might I see walking in Wales?
Red kites are now common across mid-Wales after a successful reintroduction programme — genuinely spectacular birds of prey, easy to spot circling over open hillside. Feral Welsh mountain ponies roam parts of the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia. On the coast paths, expect grey seals, dolphins in Cardigan Bay, and significant seabird colonies on the Pembrokeshire islands (Skomer's puffins are a genuine wildlife-watching highlight, April–July).
