Which Algarve beach is best?

Praia da Marinha near Carvoeiro is many visitors' favourite — limestone arches, clear water, stunning from above. Meia Praia near Lagos is huge, sandy and family-friendly. Tavira Island in the east is backed by dunes and nature reserve. The western Algarve around Sagres has wilder Atlantic surf. For beach clubs, Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago are the glamorous option.

Do you need a car in the Algarve?

For resort stays in Albufeira or Vilamoura, no — everything is walkable or taxi-accessible. For exploring the full coast — particularly the west Algarve beyond Lagos and the quieter eastern Sotavento coast — a car makes a significant difference. Roads are good and driving is easy.

When is the Algarve least busy?

May and early June, or September and October. The weather is excellent (24–28°C), the sea is warm enough to swim in (19–21°C in September), and prices are noticeably lower than peak July–August. Easter weekend is very busy. The Algarve works year-round for mild-weather breaks even in winter (16–18°C).
