Frequently Asked Questions
Which route up Snowdon is best?
The Llanberis Path is the longest but easiest gradient — best for first-timers. The Pyg Track and Miners' Track from Pen-y-Pass are the most scenic and can be combined into a loop. The Rhyd Ddu path is quieter with superb ridge views. The Watkin Path has the most ascent. Crib Goch is a genuine knife-edge scramble — only for experienced walkers with a head for heights, and lethal in wind.
Do I need to book parking for Snowdon?
Pen-y-Pass car park must be pre-booked online and sells out weeks ahead in summer. The park-and-ride Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus network connects Llanberis and other bases to all trailheads and is the least stressful option. Llanberis has larger car parks for the Llanberis Path.
How wet is Snowdonia really?
Parts of Snowdonia receive over 3,000mm of rain annually — several times what London gets. Weather changes within the hour and the summits are frequently in cloud. This is why proper waterproofs are non-negotiable. The compensation: the light after rain, waterfalls at full flow, and empty paths when fair-weather walkers stay home.
