Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I wear white or bright colours on safari?
White clothing stands out in the bush and can disturb wildlife during game drives. Bright colours — particularly blue — attract tsetse flies, which bite painfully and can carry sleeping sickness in some regions. Camouflage is inappropriate as it's associated with military activity in some countries and can be illegal. Stick to khaki, olive, beige and brown throughout.
Why do safari lodges require soft bags?
Small charter aircraft used to reach remote safari camps have very tight luggage restrictions — typically 15kg total, soft bag only. Hard-shell suitcases cannot be fitted into the tiny baggage holds of light aircraft like the Cessna Caravan. Duffel bags and soft holdalls are required. Some camps ask for bags no larger than 70x30x30cm.
Do I need malaria tablets for safari?
For most safari regions in sub-Saharan Africa — Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa (Kruger region) — yes. Malaria prophylaxis should be prescribed by a travel health clinic at least 4 weeks before departure. Common options are Malarone, Doxycycline and Lariam. South Africa's Cape region and the higher-altitude areas are generally malaria-free.
